What to consider when choosing a family broadband provider?

Making a decision that suits the whole family can be a challenge, whether it be booking a holiday, making dinner plans or choosing a film to watch.

This, however, doesn’t have to be the case when deciding what broadband to buy. Finding a plan that suits the needs of the gamers, the TikTokers or the Netflix streamers is simple when you know what is available.

Affordability, speed and reliability are the key things that UK households want from their broadband, but they also want a provider who gives honest prices, great customer service and recommends the right solutions for their customers’ needs. Fortunately, some providers offer this and more, but how do you know who to choose?

Okay, it’s fast. But what else?

What broadband speed do I need for my family?

Broadband speed is the most important element people should consider when choosing their package. Depending on the size of a family and the usage that those members will expend, this need can vary.

However, on average, it is assumed that 30Mbps per person should be more than enough to stream, game, browse and download. On this basis, a family of four should be looking at 120mbps as a minimum to prevent any lag during their activities.

Of course, if your family members are at an age where “Call of Duty” means a 2 a.m. feed, then of course, this won’t be applicable and your broadband package can be much lower.

Before making any decisions, it is worth understanding your current broadband package. It is quite common that people who haven’t changed their provider are on a tariff that is completely outdated for their situation, but knowing what you’re paying for vs. what you’re getting will help you make an informed decision on your next move.

Broadband for large families

On the basis that 30mbps is the average speed required per person to ensure everyone has the best online connection, shopping around for the best deal is crucial if you’re a larger family. With the rising cost of living and with people still working from home, there is a bigger need for deals to be found and providers to continue to support those who require more from their spending.

With that said, there are many ways for bigger families to also maximise the speed of their broadband without having to pay higher fees.

  • Turn off devices: More people can mean more tech, so unused devices must be disconnected from the WiFi.
  • Display your router: Although they’re not the most aesthetically pleasing objects, routers need to be unobstructed to emit the best signal. Being hidden on shelves or buried in the box room will inhibit their ability to reach the many devices that are trying to connect.
  • Get a WiFi booster: Whether you have a slightly bigger home or your family simply prefers their own company, getting a booster to carry the signal further is a must-have.

Broadband for low-income families

The internet is an amenity that is now ingrained in the lives of most homes within the UK, and yet unfortunately not everyone can make this possible. In this current climate, low-income families are struggling to pay the bills required, and broadband is rapidly losing out to other crucial expenditures, with up to 1 million people cancelling their broadband package between May 2022 – 23.

However, there is help available, with many broadband providers offering cheaper deals for those families on lower incomes and the government introducing a social tariff that can help people get access to broadband deals at more affordable rates for their budget.
